Curriculum

At Henry Green we provide our learners with a broad and balanced curriculum.  We follow the National Curriculum 2014 and learning is linked to a particular half termly theme. A theme provides a context to the learning, ideas for writing and opportunities for cross-curricular links.  At the start of each half-term there will be a ‘WOW entry point’ based around that particular theme. This is a fun, engaging activity that introduces the learning in a memorable way in order to motivate, enthuse and excite.  For example in the year 2 ‘Under the Sea’ theme the children visit the London Aquarium.

Reading Scheme Books

Levelled fiction and non-fiction made up largely of Oxford Reading Tree and Collins Big Cat reading schemes are available to all KS1 children to take home and are changed weekly.  Children who are below the expected levels for reading in KS2 receive targeted support with this range of books from Learning Support Assistants, who guide choices and keep records on progress.

Phonics

The Read, Write Inc. programme is taught in ability groups throughout the school from Nursery to Year 2.  A small number of children may have 1:1 as a Wave 3 intervention if they failed to make sufficient progress.  Children in years 1 and 2 are assessed half termly.  Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 are also taught aspects of this programme in small groups run by Learning Support Assistants. 

Phonics resources consist of decodeable reading books; Get writing books for children to use in the phonics lessons and 1:1 tuition resources in addition to speed sounds cards, green and red high frequency word flash cards.
